Big & Small

It's baaaaaaaack!

Sorry for the brief hiatus (what a fun word!) with the big and small segment. I...have no real explanation, besides several Sundays slipped by without me even noticing. Oops.

This week's edition is mylar balloons! I bought a bunch of these for my daughter's first birthday, and thought about how cute it was that I have teeny Re-ment star and 'round shaped' mylars! The little blue one says 'Joy' on the reverse. They fit into the little box shown, and came with a birthday cake set.

Let's say I'll see you next Sunday. Maybe there will be a post before then, if I really get my act together this week!

Big & Small

This week's big and small is a little late, but at least we made it!

Sunday was spent at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, celebrating the upcoming wedding of my (fraternity) big sister, Shana.

I brought along some Rement wine to pair with the Mount Hope Winery fineries. Hubby and I bought a good selection last time we went to faire, so I only picked up this bottle of the Holiday Wine.

You want the one on the left or the right?

Big & Small

You didn't think I forgot, did you? No faith...none at all! Haha.

It's fall once more, and this week's big and small is all about the Pumpkin Spice Latte! I rediscovered Starbucks (dangerous, I know!) When I ventured in for one.

With a tiny to-go cup like this, the girls can enjoy a 'Starrocks Coffee' right along with me!

Big & Small

Two posts?! One day?! No, I'm not feverish, but thank you for asking after my health...

I have been in a baking mood for weeks now, and the pumpkin muffin batch I made for work just hasn't fixed it. Cookies are definitely in order...

BUT! When baking around the kitchen, it is handy to have a spatula/bowl scraper to get every last bit of delicious batter (and maybe to lick at the end!) So I bring you...big scraper and little scraper! So cute!

The Re-ment scraper is from a smoothie set that I picked up early on in my Re-ment addiction collection.

Big & Small

I know, I know. It's Tuesday, and I'm just posting this. One, I'm on 'vacation' and two, I STILL have not found my third teeny pair. I suppose two will have to suffice for this week's edition!

The pink set is from the Primary School Stuff sewing kit, and the red clear pair is from my new sewing machine set! Yay!!! The lost pair was a mystery pair anyway...another solid red.

Can you all tell that I'm left handed? (all of the scissors are facing as though I am!) I have to use right handed scissors though...someone kindly bought me a really nice pair of lefty shears, and I can't cut correctly after so many years of using righties.

Big & Small

Better late than never...yada yada.

I was soooo excited to find this set on the bay a few weeks ago. I recently got the garden hose I had been after, and now the sewing set! This set e-tails for a RIDICULOUS amount because it is so cute and sought after. When I found it for a low price, I snapped it up for my collection! Here is my new Re-ment sewing machine with the master Husqvarna that has served me so well.

Big & Small

Warning: This post is actually on time!

This week's Big & Small is one of the first ideas that inspired this segment. When I received my European Grandmother's Kitchen series, I noticed immediately that the little cheese grater was a perfect replica of our IKEA Idealisk grater! I wanted to take a picture in the store with my tiny one...so today I did!

I couldn't even help it. After I snapped the big and small shot, I wanted a picture with an army of Idealisk graters...so I did that too. Find the bitty one!

See you next week...or maybe even mid-week if I'm on my game this week.

Big & Small; Two-fer-One

It's like buy one, get one free. I missed last Sunday, so this week features two Big & Small moments.

The first is brought to you by my newest Re-ment piece, the garden hose! I have been obsessed with finding/getting this set for the LONGEST time, and I finally got it on the bay. It came with the cute little bucket, soap, and sponge (and hubby joked that the girls have nothing to wash 'cept a few bikes. We'll fix that!) The seller sent me a kind note and a beautiful little origami crane!

Sticking with the outdoors theme, the other Big & Small isn't Re-ment! Oh my! It's a pair of my sunglasses, paired with (pun intended!) a small pair for the girls! I bought them on the bay, and they were actually one of my earliest purchases for Cassie. Here's an old-school pic of her donning them:

See you all next week, when my post with be (ahem) on time for a change!

Big & Small

Little bundt-cake, meet giant pound cake.

I love the little bundt/tube pan and cake set from European Grandmother's kitchen. Convenient that I made my own cake today. :)

Breakfast Bunch

Sleepovers aren't complete without a huge breakfast the next morning. The girls' table and chair set arrived today, so I got to set up this little scene after work.

Cassie, Lilah, Fawn, and Yula (arm on the right) are chowing down on waffles, fresh fruit, 'Top Smarts' and pastries.

The little Re-ment talbe is perfect. I didn't realize that it came with a couple different top covers, including this cute polka-dot one.

We also got our Summer Road Trip Swap package in the mail! It was a pretty boss mail day! Ellen sent us glam sunglasses, a Re-ment blind box, which turned out to be DELICIOUS ICE CREAM!, a beautiful handmade dress, and a little purse with a map in it. I love everything so much!

Hooray for breakfast tables and swaps!

Big & Small

Giant syrup, meet mini syrup! We finally got the ice cream set from Mini Sweets. Soooo adorable!

Will be showing off more from this set, I am sure. :)

Big & Small

I don't actually know what set this is from, but it was one of my first Re-ment purchases. The iron has a case, and a small ironing board that came with it. I was just amazed at its likeness to my 'big-people' iron!

Just for fun, here's my favorite pic of the mini-iron in action!

Big & Small

Aside from really missing my goal of July 17th (I was exhausted and didn't plan ahead) I really am proud of this week's edition.

I played with Piknik for the first time ever on flickr, and tried to jazz up my photo a big. The big-and-small candidates this week are the Re-ment sunflowers from Grandma's European Kitchen, paired with some real-life sunflowers at the farm.

Next week's will be on time, I promise!

Cassie's Birthday Celebration!

I received Cassie on May 17th, 2010, so this year marked her 'first' birthday (Cassie is in her twenties though; she is NOT one!) I decided to have a birthday party for her. The girls and I had a good time decorating.

Cassie was pretty surprised! I was just surprised that none of them slipped and told her!

Cassie cut the cake and made a wish, and everyone enjoyed the party.

Fawn with a slice of cake!

All the girls brought gifts for Cassie. They are so sweet! I actually had a lot of fun making the little gift bags and presents. They are made from actual gift bags!

Happy Birthday to my first dolly, Cassie!

Friday Five

Five of my favorite blog haunts!

1. Blythelife.com

Googled this one, but pretty sure it's Michelle's!

This blog has been mentioned by me several times, mostly in conjunction to Michelle's interviews and fabulous giveaways. Michelle interviews crafsters, customizers, and shop owners and puts together giveaways. Her blog also features a regular column titled, 'Blythe on a Budget' with tips for all of us who can't afford all the designer brands for ourselves, let alone our dolliees. Recently Michelle has posted a mini series on blogging! It was very helpful. Check her blog out for a good read!

2. Rosie Apples and Friends

Shamelessly lifted from RosieApples. Sooo cute!

Rosie's blog is what inspired me to work more seriously on my own blog! I read every entry she had posted when I first discovered it, and I have been a regular follower ever since. Her blog has a regular column called, "Teeny Tiny Tuesday," which features gorgeous pictures of her Rement each week. There are other fun bits, such as "Who Wore It Best" and Blythe DIY Tutorials.

3. Dollybird Blythe

Borrowed from Dollybird ~ This is one of my favorite pictures EVER!

I have followed this blog for a long time too! Dollybird writes about her own Blythes, as well as topics of interest to the Blythe community. This includes reviews of dolls, customization information, and features some of her sewing.

4. Mademoiselle Blythe

Fanny's gorgeous banner!

This is one of my very favorite interview blogs! Blogger Fanny Zara finds Blythe collectors, customisers, Kenner Restoration Specialists, and Fashion Designers. She then posts the interview and tons of beautiful photos. I love the new 150+ Blythe Collector interviews. The dolls in these collections are so impressive!

5. Smidge House

Photo 100% Borrowed from Carmen!

I became an obsessed fangirl of Carmen's perfect Barbie/Blythe sized furniture via etsy. This was made worse by the fact that she is a SWEETHEART to boot. I emailed her asking what type of tools she uses, and expecting either no response, or an, "I really can't divulge that, in case you can make what I make and ruin my life." Instead, I got a beautiful response almost immediately full of her knowledge and advice! (I should know by now...this community is full of wonderful people!) It wasn't until much later I found Carmen's blog. I love looking at her pieces that she repaints and details. They look amazing and difficult to believe what they started life as! Her blog is well written and funny, so all in all a great read!

Friday Five

Inspired (as always) by blogs that are much better than mine, I have decided to try a few regular columns, and see how that goes. I think the most important lesson I have learned from other blogs is that even if it's meant to post on Friday...it doesn't mean I have to wait until Friday to write it! I am trying to be better about procrastination.

To start, the girls and I bring you...the Friday Five! This can be any five things in the whole wide world. This week's edition is an easy one for me: Five Blythe-related items I am dying for!

1. Re ment Flirty Pink Collection...
This set has gotten very expensive because of the cute little rainboots that are in it, but I also love the tool set! When we were assembling Cassie's kitchen I wanted pictures of her with teeny tools looking like she was helping. I settled for her holding a real-size nail. :( I also love the paint brush, because I want to show her decorating!!!

2. A Button Arcade Dress
Warning: Not my photo! I really want one of the candy or the sushi dresses. They are sooo cute!

3. Mallows! These are the cutest little things ever! I think I will do an easter basket for the girls and maybe a photo shoot with Fawn in a sweet little eastery dress. They come in other colors and aren't that expensive. They are available on etsy from DollDestash

4. A Sugarduckfairy Headband! As my friends joked, by naming Fawn Fawn, I almost HAVE to get her one. I have oggled these for a loooong time. Next dollie-funds maybe!

5. A Blythe Carrying Case! I loooove the ones made by SewPixieDesigns. They are so beautiful looking and you can choose the fabric, notions, etc. They aren't even 'expensive' for as wonderful as they look! These little cases have a face/hair shield so that your girl doesn't get all mussed up in transit. I have been needing one since cramming Cassie in my diaper bag is not our favorite way to get her out of the house. A little wristlet for her would be perfect!

I hope none of the etsy sellers mind me using their photos (eek!) I included them to show off the beautiful work that you ladies do, and to share your shops with some readers who may not know about them.

This column won't always be about things I want...promise! It's so hard recently though, because I spent a lot on Fawn (still need to post about that little cutie!) and am trying to scale back on dollie-expenditures. There are just so many wonderful things for sale in the dollie community though!

Kitchen Design!

The kitchen, as mentioned in previous posts (like my first few...) is very, very dear to me. I work in kitchen planning, and though I don't cook, I LOVE beautiful, functional kitchens!

So for Cassie I was obsessed with creating the most perfect kitchen possible. I started with a love affair of the Kenmore kitchen, and then, after realizing that tons of Blythe and Barbie lovers have this exact set, I sought something more unique.

I paged through ebay listings galore of Barbie kitchens, before finding Vintage Sindy had a MUCH better kitchen than Barbie ever did... The pieces came with yellow doors and white countertop. What really impressed me was the cooktop cabinet and wall oven. Those were big in the seventies, but then became passe for a few decades. Now, built in is all the rage. The sink amused me the most, because it looks just like IKEA's Boholmen sink with drain board. With IKEA kitchens in mind, I realized that I could paint the cabinets (which sort of resemble our Abstrakt door style)

From there it was a long, drawn out process of acquiring pieces. I don't even want to know how much was spent on ebay in the past few months. I got the wall oven first, then a sink and cooktop cabinet. I decided on the Kitchen Littles refrigerator (it has an ice maker and great interiors). The worst (monetarily) was getting the Sindy cabinet that has four drawers and one door. The auction was in euros, and once converted to US I cringed and went "I did WHAT?!" It came with a second sink and a second cooktop cabinet.

I chose one of the sink cabinets to experiment on, since one had a broken door. Armed with Krylon Fusion for Plastic, I spray painted it white, and I couldn't have been happier with the result. Once I taped up the 'appliances' I went to town on the other pieces. The refrigerator was hit with silver spray to give it a 'stainless' look (since it was white and purple before that...)

I was obsessed with making this kitchen great, so I didn't want to simply paint the countertop...I wanted Cassie to have some custom laminate! I ordered samples from Wilsonart. They have small samples for free, but I got 8x10 sheets for a dollar. They also conveniently allow you to up the quantity of samples. I got three sheets for the kitchen. The first cabinet to get covered was the drawer unit.

From there it was just covering the other cabinets and detailing the handles. I used my husband's miniature paints that we get through Reaper. They are a steely black. The cooktop cabinet was difficult to cover with laminate, so I took my handy spare and experimented with popping the cooktop off. Let me tell you, Sindy stuff is WELL MADE. I couldn't remove the doors to paint because they are secure with METAL rods, rather than plastic, and they run all the way through the door, not just a little nub at the top or bottom. The cooktop was equally secure, so I had to use pliers to BREAK the pieces that held it on. That made covering a flat piece MUCH easier...and...I discovered I had a second cabinet at my disposal!

This changed Cassie's layout quite a bit. I went from an A-line kitchen to an L shape. I liked the way it put the fridge; when you open the refrigerator side you can see all the interiors if you look at the house straight on. It also helps hide my one paint boo-boo. I plan to detail the ice maker in black with silver buttons, and then paint the sides and top black as well. It will look like IKEA's Nutid fridge. :) The oven/microwave have not been painted yet, but Glenn cut the floor pieces, and I picked up some tile for the kitchen (yes, it will have real tile. :)

I can't wait to finish the detail work, add a window and backsplash, and then assemble the room. :) Cassie's Re-ment goodies finally have a home!

Dreaming of Doll Houses...

In my quest to find everything that is Blythe, I stumbled upon an article about housing Blythe. It seems that many collectors use book cases or similarly sized structures to house their dolls. That seemed logical and do-able.

What absolutely captivated me were the details. I hadn't even purchased my Blythe doll at that point, but the photos I found made me want to create my own house for her! WoollyRockers cute little kitchen had me from the moment I saw it...

...and the addiction only got worse when I stumbled upon Squeaky Towers. Blythe fashion designer Squeaky Monkey created an absolutely amazing, detailed, BEAUTFIUL Blythe home for her dolls...Check out the full set on Flickr...the photos are as beautiful as the house! There are many rooms, in progress and complete pictures, and best of all, lots of notes to help would be doll house makers!

Thanks to helpful Blythe collectors who leave notes (like Squeaky), share tips, etc, I finally figured out where all of the cute food and accessories were coming from...Re-ment. Re-ment is a Japanese miniature company. The sets usually come in mystery boxes, so you have a one in ten shot at getting any certain set. There are plenty of shops now that offer individual sets for around five dollars, so you don't have to play with Lady Luck. I spent a ton of time just looking at all the different Re-Ment sets and figuring out what everything was, what I might want, shipping, etc. One of my favorites is The Doll Peddlar They have a large selection!

The object of my obsession though, appears to be the kitchen. I don't know if it's due to my new job as a Kitchen Planner at IKEA, or because I love food, or because my own kitchen is a mess...but I want my doll to have an amazing kitchen. The set that Squeaky used and the popular favorite amongst the B-gals is the "My First Kenmore Kitchen Play Set" that was produced by Sears. The appliances look so clean and realistic, everything opens, and the wall cabinets really give it a complete look. I am on my quest to find and purchase one!

So, my insanity ensues. I spent a decent amount of money on a doll, and now plan to spend even more to make her a house that is nicer than my own! Haha. I am waiting on a few ebay purchases, and then we may get construction under way! I almost dropped dead when my husband told me that yes, it was a good idea to get the furniture FIRST! Hopefully this weekend I can land my dream pieces and start working on it!
